About Us
Compound Playground is a contemporary dance musical theater created by a group of young Taiwanese artists who wanted to express their cultural identities and stories through contemporary dance, music, film, crowd work, and food.
Taiwanese duo Chieh Hsiung and Yu-Wei Heath-Hsiao (Yoyo) founded the team during their time in the Emergence Artist Program at Culture Lab LIC in 2022. A year later, Compound Playground’s production, Islanders 寶島慢播, secured funding from the Taipei Culture Center in New York, as well as grants from Flushing Town Hall, New York Foundation for the Arts, and Gibney Company.
Compound Playground’s production, Islanders 寶島慢播, and Chieh & Yoyo have been showcased at several events, including Taiwanese Reality Show “Have a Seat請世界吃桌”, Broadway in Bryant Park by iHeartRadio 2022 & 2025, Passport to Taiwan at Union Square 2022 and 2026, New York Travel Show 2026, APAP 2026, US Open Fan Week 2025, World Journal’s Mid-Autumn Cultural Day 2022, and Taiwan Fest; and at venues, including Gibney Theater, Culture Lab LIC, Flushing Town Hall, Queens Theater, Javits Center, Queens Library, and Taiwan Center.
